Coast Modern w/ Netherfriends & Trash Panda in Charlotte, NC
March 13 @ 7:00 pm - March 14 @ 1:00 am
A shape-shifting Los Angeles-based duo who infuse their breezy, west coast electro-pop with elements of hip-hop, indie rock, and psych-pop, Coast Modern is the brainchild of Seattle native Luke Atlas and L.A.-based Coleman Trapp.
The pair met in 2013 as struggling songwriters in the crowded Southern California hitmaking scene. After two years of failing to cast their creations into the mainstream, Trapp retreated to Denver, Colorado to get a little perspective, and began writing songs for himself, rather than the latest tastemaker. He would send theses noodlings back to Atlas, who would add bits of production, and before long, Atlas was back in the City of Angels, and Coast Modern was born. The newly minted duo dropped their first single, “Hollow Life,” in 2015, and it drew rave reviews and comparisons to artists like Grouplove, Cage the Elephant, Twenty-One Pilots, and Alt-J. A second single, “Animals,” followed in 2016 and was accompanied by performances at SXSW and tour dates with acts like Børns and the Temper Trap. They delivered their self-titled debut album in the summer of 2017. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
“Just a one man band on the run from the CHI.”
Netherfriends is Shawn Rosenblatt. He is always on tour and releases music like it’s the end of the world. He finished a year long project of writing and recording a song and performing in all 50 states in 2010. In 2016 he released a new LP every month online and this year (2017) he is releasing 2 new albums every month. When he performs live he doesn’t use backing tracks or a laptop, but instead uses 2 loop pedals and various instruments. Netherfriends music is hard to describe, he makes music in various genres, but mostly focuses on rap/ hip hop-centric beats and singing about love and tree. He currently lives in Austin, TX, but plans to move back to chicago one day and open a store called Netherfriends.
Start Time: 8:00
Trash Panda is a new and rapidly rising band from Atlanta, ga. After the successful release of their debut EP, Off, which charted their third single “Giuseppe” to number 2 on both Spotify’s US and Global Viral charts (making it just below the weeknd’s “starboy”), it was evident Trash Panda had created something new and fresh. The Off EP came into being in the minds of Patrick Taylor and Mitch Standfield in summer of 2016 adding Max Hewett on soon after to complete the trio. The band is known for their DIY attitude and their insistence upon home-recording and their new LP is no exception. It was recorded in a house lovingly dubbed “the treehouse” just north of Atlanta, where the band exercises its belief in capturing good energy over technical perfection. Over a million plays on Spotify later, the band has finished recording a new record blending together psychedelic rock and indie, even soulful sensibilities with nonchalance and a rebellious spirit sometimes fusing punk and soul in an off alchemy of ferociousness and stoned malaise. Their live show at one moment can be aggressive and wild and transfuse to a calm, hip-shaking spacey groove.
