Lisa De Novo at Legion Brewing
Jun 25 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Lisa began singing and songwriting at a very young age. By age 10, she had 3 albums handwritten in journals. She started performing at community outreaches through music, drama, and dance, then branched out to open mics and solo gigs. “I’ve been in love with music for as long as I can remember. I tried out different career paths, but the only thing that felt right for me was music. Music is a powerful thing. It allows you to get things off your chest while connecting with others on a very deep level.”

Lisa’s influences include Amy Winehouse, Florence and the Machine, Foster the People, Lights, Ed Sheran, Above and Beyond, Odesza, and Coldplay. In October 2016, she released her first solo EP the Stars Align – now available on itunes and spotify. She has done several electronic dance music collaborations with DJ’s all over the world. The songs have more than 300,000 hits on youtube.

The alternative pop/rock band – Lisa De Novo Band – is made up of singer-songwriter Lisa De Novo, lead guitarist Zach Willard, bass player Michael Lanigan, and drummer Mitch Moore. “We’ve officially been a band since April 2017 after I asked the guys to join me at Shakedown Festival. We could tell after the first time we jammed together, that we instantly clicked. The guys heard my songs and added their own unique twists to them! My jaw dropped and I knew we had to make an album.”

The Big Bang marks Lisa De Novo’s first full-length studio album. “Recording was a very difficult process. There were so many setbacks like losing my voice from late night gigs and early morning studio sessions as well as struggling to make time to write and practice.” Lisa worked hard to complete the album with a packed schedule, working more than 60 hours a week. In order to fund the album, she taught music at two different preschools, worked a studio job, hosted open mic nights, played shows, and led worship at her church—with little or no time off. Despite the personal sacrifices and recording challenges, Lisa embraces the art form of the recording process at its core. “Guitar takes were the hardest because there are so many ways to strum a G chord! The harmonies were the most fun because I was able to experiment with new vocal sounds and sing notes I never knew I could sing.’

The Big Bang Album is a unique blend of pop, soul, and alternative rock. Combining Mitch’s metal drum background, Michael’s funk bass techniques, Zach’s progressive rock guitar style, with Lisa’s sweet yet soulful voice, the album evokes a truly organic sound. The album includes 7 full band songs, including “Not Giving Up,” “Cigarette Love Song,” and the crowd favorite “Monkey See, Monkey Do.” There are also 3 acoustic songs that feature different instruments giving the album an exciting dynamic vibe.

Please join them for the Big Bang CD release show on 5/5/18!

Chris Moreno at Hoppin
Jul 28 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Chris Moreno is a Nashville based singer/songwriter, and recording artist, who in just a short time has been making waves as an up and coming artist to watch. His honest sound and sincere delivery connect with fans on a personal level. At its core, Moreno’s music is a genuine reflection of his real life experiences and down-to-earth personality. As one reviewer put it, his songs “draw in the listener as if a deep secret or universal truth is about to be revealed.”

Moreno’s music mixes elements of a modern country sound with a noticeable Pop/Rock edge, and Moreno brazenly wears the alternative rock influences of the 90’s and 2000’s on his sleeve. The result is a unique sound that feels both fresh and familiar at the same time. Following the success of his debut album, “Into the Sun” in 2016, Moreno released a follow-up EP “Into the Night” – in May 2018. This time around he partnered with Nashville producer, Jonathan Roye (Kelsea Ballerini, Jacob Davis), to harness his eclectic sound.

42- Tribute to Coldplay at Alive After Five
Aug 10 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

We are ’42,’ a tribute to one of the finest bands in the world, Coldplay.

We don’t view ourselves as another ‘Tribute’ band on the bill or an act of imitation. Instead, we pour ourselves into every song & performance out of our own genuine love for Coldplay & their music. The raw energy and emotion we devote to each song is sincere & we’re insanely humbled to have this opportunity to bring this to live stages all across the world. As ardent fans, we’ve set out to be the tribute band that we ourselves would be clamoring to see time after time. We strive to leave no stone unturned for a well rounded experience covering Coldplay’s extensive body of work, ranging from Parachutes to Prospekt’s March. To put it simply, it’s 42’s goal to bring the greatest glimpse into the Coldplay experience and we hope to translate to our audiences the elation it gives us to play their amazing work.

So please come & share with us these very special songs in celebration of one of the greatest and most influential groups of our time!

September 19

In America today, anyone can engage in spiritual surrender. Performing the rite is simple: one first gathers with their community in a room of mirrors (in peripheral vision these mirrors appear as windows). Next, the agendas, hopes, and grievances of each individual are written down and cast along pulsed radio frequencies to data centers. From here they are automatically sifted through a neural network of graphics processing units, and contributed to an artificial intelligence engine. The principal aim of the ritual is to preserve the cosmic movement of collective perception. Secondary aims include catharsis, prosperity, and (occasionally) procreation. Because of the persistence of social stresses and mounting political dread, the ritual’s cyclic performance is necessary (twice daily, once at dusk and once at dawn).
Paradoxically, even those who question the efficacy of this tradition must do so from within the same framework, in the form of status updates, tweets, or blog posts. In the early part of 2017 Noah wrote:
“This is our voice. The Aether. An invisible platform. A maze of wires and boxes safely containing our proclamations… While white men with pens close their doors, stuff their ears with cotton, and break the world… we piss in the ocean… we drown in white noise.”
(Once upon a time, Noah Gundersen poetically sang that the storms which make us tremble also “fill our organs up with air,”…allowing us to sing “honest songs”. What of our songs now? Are they just piss in the ocean? White Noise?)
A longtime fan responded via Facebook, referring to the entry as “a goddamn dumpster fire of a post”.
“Your early records are masterpieces,” he commented, “…but this scramble to be anything but what your parents are is killing your authenticity.”
Authenticity can be a fickle mistress it seems. Noah has been peddling sincerity and introspection in musical form for almost a decade; songs that give listeners a taste of the emotional nectar in the pit of another human’s gut. He’s been dredging up viscous fistfulls of his own being and shaping them into little waxen votives, candles meant to illuminate the territory between shameless confession and hopeless redemption, for all of the other twenty-somethings who’ve been groping around in that long existential shadow.
At some point this whole process must have lost its charm. It was two years ago that Noah, like some artistic ouroboros, began to sing the words “Am I earning the right to live by looking in a mirror? There’s nothing more sincere than selfish art?” The cyclic ritual of self-induced nausea, staring in the mirror mouth agape, waiting to wretch new words and sounds, was catching up with him. Not long after, in the early part of 2016, he sat down for a show and felt like he was dying.
“Instead of my life up to that point flashing before my eyes, it was my future. A future playing songs I didn’t believe in… pouring my soul out into a vehicle I no longer recognized or loved.”
Noah turned to a fellow songwriter, who shared this mote of reassurance from dancer and choreographer Martha Graham:
“No artist is pleased… There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”
This crisis was an opportunity for the serpent to relinquish hold of its own tail, for forward motion. To turn his gaze away from reflection, and maybe instead at the mirror itself, alternate voices and distorted perceptions that throw their weight onto the human psyche in powerful ways, but evade expression in introspective storytelling.
So, that’s White Noise, I think: the fluorescent glow of queer divine dissatisfaction. The distorted buzz manufactured by dumb metal phalluses thrust into a vacuum of waves and signals. It doesn’t dwell on (and in fact seems uninterested in) introspection. Not a guiding light. Not the reasoned problem-solving of the ego, but the muddled demands of the id. It’s a myriad of interpolated signals, symbols, and voices, like a tube-TV greedily flipping through channels on auto-program:
“Heavy Metals” is cosmic dismay that’s been pasted over with a sugary synth veneer. “Cocaine, Sex, and Alcohol (From a Basement in L.A.)”, like a messy public broadcast, leverages a din of drunken band sounds and disoriented muttering, “I’ve got all this alcohol… do you wanna see my show?”
The decadent yearning of “Bad Desire” sits between the other songs of dissolution like a soap opera broadcasting alongside the evening news. Just as Noah finishes crooning the final honey-sweet chorus, “…and I wanna see you tonight, one last time,” we transition into night sweats, the frantic yelling of sleep terrors, all heralding the cathartic industrial funeral dirge of “Wake Me Up, I’m Drowning”.
Noah is no longer lighting votives, but dumpster fires—big, bright, symbolic and chaotic. Musical vignettes of combustion, rubbish, degeneracy and, perhaps most comfortingly, warmth; because sometimes overlooked in the mad grasping for heady, introspective Authenticity is music that’s heartfelt. In “The Sound”, Noah scourges a source of entitlement that is entirely ambiguous, but does so with a sort of exasperated conviction that is only ever reserved for one’s nation, one’s God, or one’s self. The words “How many times will you shit on what you’re given? How many times till you shut up and listen?” escape his throat with a desperation that (bafflingly) surpasses even his most vulnerable songs about heartbreak, addiction, or loss of faith.
Whether the voices he channels are symbolic or literal, paralyzed with fear or pushing a manic brand of salvation, each amounts to something laced with warm, ruddy veins (I have a feeling that Noah’s music always will). If you listen closely you’ll hear the spiritualist, who takes solace in the fact that when he’s gone, the water in his body may be the beginning of something new. There’s also the doomsayer, certain of his fate, but still so afraid, who can’t help but ask of his own violent trembling, “Are these my feet attempting to dance?” Then there’s mortality, trying to shout through all of the noise, “Send my love to everyone.”
White Noise was produced by Nate Yaccino and features long-time band-members and collaborators Abby Gundersen, Jonny Gundersen, and Micah Simler. It will be released into the Aether on September 22nd, 2017

Lisa De Novo at Growler USA
Sep 29 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Bob Dylan
Nov 9 @ 8:00 pm

Bob Dylan’s career has lasted the better part of fifty years now. That’s pretty remarkable. What is more impressive is that Dylan has remained not only active for almost all of that period, but controversial. He has never gotten by on sentimentality or nostalgia. He has never repeated his successes. For better or for worse, Dylan has always pushed his work ahead.

Bob Dylan is as great a songwriter – ah, let’s not beat around the bush – as great an artist as America has produced. But he’d be the first to tell you that he is part of a long line, one link in an endless chain. You can follow his influence backward or forward according to your own inclination. Or you can spend a long time just listening to Dylan’s five decades of contributions. Wherever you go into it, and whatever you get out of it, your time will be well spent – Bill Flanagan – New York, 2007

Trace Bundy
Nov 16 @ 7:30 pm

Internationally-acclaimed guitar virtuoso Trace Bundy must be seen, not just heard. His music is poetry in motion, using harmonics, looping, multiple capos, and his unique banter and stage presence to deliver an unforgettable live concert experience. Listening to his intricate arrangements is one thing, but seeing the fan-dubbed ‘Acoustic Ninja’ play live confounds even the most accomplished music lovers as to how one person can do all that with just two hands and ten fingers.

Bundy’s unique career has brought him across the world, with concerts in 28 countries and counting – from high-tech performance halls in South Korea and Italy, to remote villages in Zimbabwe and Guatemala. He has independently sold over 125,000 albums on his record label, Honest Ninja Music. His video clips circulate virally at astonishing speed, with over 40 million YouTube views to date.

Jimmy Leslie at Guitar Player Magazine blogs “It was easy to see why Bundy plays bigger venues on each tour. In his hands, the acoustic guitar is an imagination station, and there was no telling where he is going take the audience at any given turn. Thrilling stuff.”

Audiocast Magazine from Austin, TX agrees: ‘Bundy’s live show is without a doubt an event that needs to be witnessed rather than told about. With such a jaw-dropping performance, Bundy’s live concert is a slap in the face that would leave a palm print on the memory of everyone in the audience.

Front Country
Dec 7 @ 8:00 pm

An acoustic band born in the land of tech innovation, Front Country was unlikely to be accepted as an authentic American roots band out of the gate. Cutting their teeth in progressive bluegrass jams in San Francisco’s Mission District and rehearsing across the bay in Oakland, they fashioned their own take on roots music and Indie Folk, with the tools they had on hand. A mandolinist with a degree in composition and classical guitar. A guitarist trained in rock and world music. A bassist equally versed in jazz and newgrass. A violinist with technique that could seamlessly hop between honky tonk and electropop. And a female lead singer with grit and soul that was also a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. In a wood-paneled country dive bar in the shadow of the San Francisco skyline, Front Country forged a sound hell bent on merging the musical past with the future. The result lies somewhere between Indie Folk and Americana, in a nether-region they’ve come to embrace as their own.

This West Coast outfit was just a group of friends playing a monthly gig until 2012 and 2013 when Front Country gathered around a single microphone at the RockyGrass and Telluride festivals, and won first prize in those prestigious band contests that once launched the careers of the Dixie Chicks, Greensky Bluegrass and the Steep Canyon Rangers. The contest wins bolstered their confidence in their unique mix of original songwriting, vocal harmonies and instrumental virtuosity, steeling their resolve to take a leap of faith and become a full time touring band.

With the release of their debut full-length album Sake of the Sound in 2014, Front Country began the nose-grinding work of making their name as a national touring act. Still based in the San Francisco Bay Area, they would trek the 6,000+ mile circle around the U.S. for months at a time, introducing themselves for the first time to every room that would have them. Thanks to the glow of their contest wins, festivals around the U.S. caught wind and invited them to play for their large audiences, giving Front Country a crucial first break. Old Settlers in Austin, MerleFest in North Carolina, Wintergrass in Seattle, Strawberry in California and Grey Fox in New York, all took a chance on the promising new band and solidified Front Country’s hold on the imagination of progressive-leaning acoustic music fans.

If there was any one song from their debut album that they all agreed they had never heard the likes of before, it would have to be the title track “Sake of the Sound”. A pop song with a rock arrangement, played entirely on acoustic instruments. It was almost as if bluegrass instruments had been unearthed 200 years from now in a time capsule, and were re-purposed to make post-apocalyptic modern pop music. Front Country has been drawn more and more into this peculiar aesthetic, writing and arranging songs that are simultaneously intricate, intense and infectious. They’ve been called “Roots Pop”: the past is discernible with a wink and a nod, and the future is here.

Andrew Marlin
Dec 13 @ 7:30 pm

You may be familiar with Andrew from his involvement with Chapel Hill, NC duo
Mandolin Orange. As the songwriter for the band, Andrew has become known as a
gifted lyricist, producing powerful yet subtle, thoughtfully crafted songs. With Mandolin Orange, Andrew has toured the world, gracing famous stages including the Ryman Auditorium, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and Newport Folk Festival, to name just a few.

Buried In a Cape , Andrew’s first solo project, was released September 14, 2018. The
album is a collection of his instrumental work. He wrote the songs on and off the road,
and the recording session was scheduled on a whim at the Butcher Shoppe in
Nashville, TN with Eli West (guitar, banjo), Christian Sedelmyer (fiddle), and Clint
Mullican (bass). The compositions highlight Andrew’s skills as an instrumentalist, while showcasing that his writing skills are not confined to poignant lyricism.

With Buried In a Cape, Andrew follows in the footsteps of his previous accolades . The
Mandolin Cafe said ‘Marlin joins his heroes as a mandolinist of note, and a talent for the ages,’ while Red Line Roots praised the album saying ‘ Buried In a Cape is (in my
opinion) the best record to be released in 2018. For those of you who are already fans
of instrumental music, this will be your go to for years to come. For those who are not
fans of instrumental music, listen to this album and then I’ll say ‘welcome to the club’.’

For these shows, Andrew will be joined by his Buried In A Cape recording band
(Christian Sedelmyer, Eli West, and Clint Mullican). This cast of players have history
with a list of roots music luminaries including Jerry Douglas, Bill Frisell, and Tim O’
Brien alongside their acclaimed solo projects.
