Kenny George Band and Few Miles South
Jul 28 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Kenny George Band
Music’s elders and icons established the initial template for Rock ‘n’ Roll, but it’s the newer generation that keeps it thriving and moving forward. So credit the Kenny George Band for doing exactly that. Comprised of Kenny George (lead guitar, vocals, songwriter), Bucky Brown (drums, harmony vocals), Center Ely (steel guitar), Brooks Andrews (bass) and Scott Rankin (rhythm guitar, harmony vocals), this hardworking ensemble has earned their stripes the hard way. Performing an average of 150 to 180 shows per year throughout the heartland, they bring their music to the masses one gig at a time.

“Our goal has always been to connect with our audiences,” George insists. “Our music is honest and organic, and we deliberately avoid pretence. We may seem like a ragtag bunch, but there’s a passion, purpose and sincerity that underscores everything we do, and hopefully that’s apparent even the first time you hear us play.”

Hailing from Aiken, South Carolina, the Kenny George Band has created an indelible impression with fans throughout the Southeast and Midwest, playing 250 concerts in the last two years alone. They’ve travelled the highways and byways between North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Missouri, reconnecting with their fervent followers and picking up new fans along the way. Their explosive live performances have made them a band on the brink of a breakout, and it’s little wonder that in 2016, they were voted South Carolina Artists to Watch by the South Carolina Music Guide.

Tempered by the time they’ve spent on the road, the band’s latest album, Borrowed Trouble, looks at life, longing and relationships through the vast spectrum of constant tours and travel. Like the road itself, it dips and sways, advancing not in a straight line, but rather in a series of circuitous twists and turns that reveal a uniquely personal perspective every step along the way. These are songs infused with tattered circumstance and a view of life as seen looking out the windows of one’s touring van, where miles of highway offer plenty of time for reflection and contemplation. The music is underscored by a drive and determination that makes it both engaging and enlightening in equal measure. It’s melodic, it’s measured, and it’s often gritty, but it’s a sound that resonates in ways that are both tender and tenacious.

That’s no accident. George himself has been drawn to music most of his life. He picked up the violin at the age of eight, but didn’t take to formal lessons, so he then took up bass. Eventually though, he decided that guitar would be the better match. “My dad told me that the guitar players get all the girls,” he laughs. “So he bought me my first guitar as a gift when I graduated from junior high. I learned to make music on that guitar and I’m pleased to say I still have it to this very day.”

Inspired by the sounds of the burgeoning Americana movement — bands like Whiskeytown and Wilco, and later the so-called “Outlaw” country clan — indeniable icons like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine and Townes Van Zandt — George later immersed himself in probing the roots of the rock and country crossover, exploring the Southern California singer/songwriter scene by way of Jackson Browne, the Eagles and J.D. Souther. He attended the University of Montevallo in Alabama, majoring in classical guitar and later studying special education for the deaf and hard of hearing. Forced to drop out after losing his funding, he turned his attention to writing songs. That’s when he met drummer Bucky Brown and the two decided to start a band. Relocating to Aiken, they found pedal steel player Center Ely, who George describes as shy and unassuming, but a wiz when it comes to fixing their gear. At first they played covers while honing their chops in the local bar scene, then began phasing in original material as well. “We went through bass players like Spinal Tap went through drummers,” George chuckles, referring to the continuing need to fill that anchor spot. “When we found Brooks, we knew we had the right guy. It was worth going through half a dozen candidates just to find the one that fit.”

The last to join was guitarist Scott Rankin, an acquaintance of Kenny’s who had asked him to fill in for a show when Rankin’s second guitarist had to bow out of the gig at the last minute. “Little did I know, we would play a four hour show,” George recalls. “But it did give us a chance to perform together and that inspired us to play together even more after that. We decided we sounded pretty good, and eventually I was able to coax him into joining our band.”

In the interim, George took a brief hiatus in New York City to work with producer Damien Dash, but the cold New York winter, lack of opportunity and the steep cost of living prompted him to return home less than five months later. It proved to be a good decision, and with three releases under their belt — the Gunshy EP (their 2014 debut), Zac Brown Sessions (a prize bestowed as the result of winning a songwriting contest in 2013), and Live From Sky City (recorded in concert in Augusta, Georgia) — and their latest, Borrowed Trouble, set to release in late April, the Kenny George Band is poised to garner new admirers and consolidate an already ample following all at the same time.

“It takes time to really make a mark,” George reckons. “It’s a slow process and there’s a lot of work involved. However, as long as we can share our experiences and build relationships with our audiences, I feel we’re making progress all along the way.”
***************

Few Miles South

Few Miles South is a country southern rock group created by South GA raised, Blake English, and Los Angeles native, Tori Lund. The two met in 2014 while playing in an L.A. church. Tori, a classically trained singer and piano teacher, and Blake, a multi-instrumentalist and producer connected over a shared love of country music. They began to write and record songs with intentions to shop them to other artists, but after a couple years bonding with their catalog they decided to wrangle up some local musicians and form a band.

After getting their fill of city life, they quit their jobs, packed up their dog and headed to the dirty south to be nearer to the country scene. Few Miles South offers a refreshing take on country music: a “touch of the Bakersfield sound”, blues and southern rock with influences ranging from Hank Williams to the Allman Brothers. In 2017 they released their first single and music video, “On Down the Road,” which charted overseas, and they are soon to follow with a 5 track EP featuring renowned pedal steel guitarist Bob “Boo” Bernstein (Tanya Tucker, Emmylou Harris, Dwight Yoakum). FMS can be found performing and road tripping across the U.S., continuing to write and raising their 3 dogs.

Repeat Repeat
Aug 9 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Mixing the sunny swoon of sixties pop with a dark swirl of Warholian garage rock, *repeat repeat create their own geography, dreaming up songs rooted in the spirit of both coasts. Based in Nashville, TN, the band looks beyond the borders of their landlocked hometown and, instead, mix California surf culture and New York street smarts into the same track list. A blend of bloom, doom, and boom, they’re “Dick Dale’s snot-nosed grandkids.”

A self-described family business, *repeat repeat was founded by Jared Corder,  — a former punk-rock kid raised on the sounds of Bad Religion and Black Flag. The goal was simple: to make edgy, guitar-driven music that nodded to the classic sounds of Jared’s California birthplace, complete with hazy harmonies and surf-inspired arrangements. When the band’s producer, Gregory Lattimer suggested that Jared’s wife, Kristyn, sing with the band, the group began working on their debut album “Bad Latitude.”

*Repeat repeat hit the road in support of the album’s release in the summer of 2014. They traveled from city to city, while Nashville’s top-ranked radio station, WRLT Lightning 100, supported the band with plenty of airplay back home. Most importantly, the bandmates saw the country and gained new perspectives. When it came time to write a second record, those perspectives came into play, inspiring *repeat repeat to write songs not only about themselves, but about the characters orbiting around them.

The band has toured with Beach Slang, opened for Neon Trees, and has a slew of major festival performances under their belt, including Forecastle, Firefly and SXSW. “*repeat repeat” has a sound that is bold, bi-coastal beach pop, at once coolly current and proudly vintage. Its sugar-coated music with a raw, real, rocky center that’s, and unmistakably *repeat repeat.

Toad The Wet Sprocket
Sep 20 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Toad the Wet Sprocket (Glen Phillips on lead vocals and guitar, Dean Dinning on bass and vocals, Todd Nichols on lead guitar and vocals, and Randy Guss on the drums) share in the kind of musical chemistry that can only come from meeting in high school and writing, recording and touring on albums over the course of those 25 years. After “Bread & Circus,” they followed with “Pale” in 1990, “fear” in ’91, “Dulcinea” in 1994, and “Coil” in 1997, as well as some compilations and rarities compilations along the way. While most will feel the comforting familiarity of the Billboard-charting hits, “Walk on the Ocean,” “All I Want,” “Something’s Always Wrong,” and “Fall Down,” new fans will also be well familiar with their new hits such as “California Wasted” which continues to climb the charts. Even with a period of the band members weaving in and out of each other’s musical lives, the same creative curiosity that inspired the band to form in 1986 has brought them full circle to come back together again. Toad the Wet Sprocket’s last album “New Constellation,” which was launched with an impressive #3 most funded Kickstarter Campaign in music for the year, was the bands’ first new album in 16 years when released in 2013, and features the singles “New Constellation”, “The Moment”, and “California Wasted.” The band’s current release, the EP “Architect of Ruin” was released in June of 2015.

VEAUX with Starboarders
Oct 6 @ 10:00 pm

Facebook Event

Nashville’s newest alt/pop trio, VEAUX, consists of brothers Aaron and Dominick Wagner and long-time friend Andrew Black.
After playing music together off and on for years, the band finally took shape late one night in a hotel bar over a round of gin and tonics.

Their newest single, “If You Could Feel My Love,’ embodies the frustration of constantly being on the wrong page with someone you’re trying to reconcile with. When words fail you and your only hope is that your actions speak louder.
The name VEAUX (pronounced “vō”), a colloquial French term for “commoner,” is a nod to the humble origins of the members and their desire to always stay true to who they are. Aaron Wagner has this to say on the subject: “When we look back on our lives as old men, I want to be able to say that we were true to ourselves. We spent years being paralyzed by fear and perfectionism, and we are finally in a place as a band and as a family to create honest art and let the chips fall where they may.”

The band is currently in the studio writing songs and booking shows across the country.
**************

Matt, Greg and Bill met in 2006. Over the course of several years Matt and Bill formed a bond musically and began pursuing music together. Working with several other local musicians, they gained some ground and saw the project begin to take shape. Hearing that Greg had played bass some years prior, they inquired about having him play with them as they were interested in starting a group that would get together and play music just for the fun of writing and working on the craft. Greg came in the first night and told them the story of him selling all his bass equipment some ten years prior. But immediately Bill and Matt were blown away by his bass playing – it brought a life to the music they were writing that had not yet been there. With the addition of Greg, they officially became Starboarders in 2009. Even during the first few rehearsals it was clear that they wanted to begin playing shows and did so in Knoxville, TN, Charlotte, NC and Nashville, TN. What had begun as a simple gathering of a few guys with a common desire to make music had become something much more. As they grew and matured in the music, they decided to begin working several songs up to make an EP. After meeting Yanic Bercier, who heard the Conversations EP, they were encouraged to take the work that had done on the EP and make a full length album CHROMA. After relocating to Atlanta, GA, the band expanded to include Cory Estes and Dan Snyder as well as several other amazing musicians. The collective of STARBOARDERS that plays with Matt often changes, but the music brings the same passion regardless of the players. Starboarders have played all over the country, but now are based in Charlotte, NC and are readying for the release of their 2nd full length album.

Welshy Arms
Oct 9 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

It could be an actual place or just a feeling, but we’re all searching for home in one way or another. In times like these, it’s a state of mind that remains harder and harder to come by as the world gets crazier and crazier. Welshly Arms most definitely attest, and that search drives the group’s 2018 full-length debut, No Place Is Home [Republic Records].

Lacing daring alternative rock with gospel-size scope and bluesy heart, the Cleveland, OH six-piece—Sam Getz [lead vocals, guitar], Brett Lindemann [keys], Jimmy Weaver [bass], Mikey Gould [drums], Bri Bryant [vocals], and Jon Bryant [vocals]—cook up thirteen anthems that welcome listeners to chant along everywhere…

“We’ve been traveling so much over the past few years,” explains Sam. “It’s awesome to see so many new places and play to people everywhere, but you do feel a bit rootless. One month, the tour bus is our home. The next, we’re overseas living out of hotels. When we actually get back to our hometown, it doesn’t feel like home, because we’ve gotten so used to being on the road. At the same time, it’s easy to feel lost and like you don’t belong anywhere in the world. That’s the overall theme of the songs.”

Since 2013, Welshly Arms have canvased nearly every corner of the globe spurned along by a bevy of seismic and show-stopping songs. Their 2017 EP, Legendary, boasted the ubiquitous title track, “Legendary.” To date, it has earned gold certifications in Germany and Switzerland, cracked over 47 million Spotify streams in under two years, received 1.5 million Shazams, and soared to Top 15 at Alternative Radio. Meanwhile, the group’s tracks have piped through campaigns for Miller, Hulu, NFL, Indian Motorcycles, and Beck’s Beer, while “Hold On I’m Coming” roared over the trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s Academy Award- winning The Hateful Eight. Additionally, they lit up the stage at Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! and earned praise from Indie Shuffle, Baeble, Cleveland.com, and more.

In the midst of this whirlwind, the musicians rented a 19 th century house in Cleveland to record what would become No Place Is Home. They transformed the remote farm house into a de facto Welshly Arms headquarters and creative haven complete with separate rooms dedicated to keyboards, guitars, writing, listening to vinyl, and, of course, recording. This served as the site of the album’s genesis.

“It just felt like a really creative and safe area to make new music,” says Jimmy. “We primarily record here, because it’s got everything we need. As years went by, we’ve accumulated so many different instruments and recording studio toys that had to often live in closets or storage units. Now, we’ve got everything in one place. You can write songs in any room. There’s no pressure. There are no time limits. It really brought a special energy to what we were doing.”

That energy courses through the first single “Sanctuary.” Propelled by powerful handclaps, sweeping organs, and robust guitars, the track stretches to cathedral-size heights highlighted by an angelic choir of voices as Sam assures, “You are, you are safe with me.”

“Lyrically, it’s all about getting through these hard times, connecting with someone, and making your safe place together,” the vocalist goes on. “We’re taking that classic sound and making it our own.”

“I just remember envisioning a whole group singing an inspiring lyric together,” adds Jimmy. “It could be in a bar or in an arena. That’s the vibe.”

Elsewhere, the album commences with rustling guitars and spaghetti western-esque whistling before snapping into a soulful strut. “Down to the River” adds a new face to revival-style energy with its swaggering punch. Then, there’s “Indestructible,” which thrives on a funkified shuffle.

“That one’s fun,” smiles Sam. “We wanted to give people something to move to. We kicked it off with a feeling. It’s about a woman who’s too strong for you. You’re having a hard time getting something going, because she’s so in
destructible.”

In the end, Welshly Arms make audiences feel right at home by elevating their sound to a bigger and bolder stratosphere.

“No Place Is Home really showcases our love for music,” concludes Jimmy. “We approach things in different ways and push ourselves. We’ve moved up a grade as a band.”

“There are so many different turns on this record, as far as the sounds and themes go,” Sam leaves off. “ ‘Legendary’ was the first step towards something bigger. This shows our progression as a whole.”

The Nude Party, Glove, Echo Courts
Oct 25 @ 8:00 pm
THE NUDE PARTY

The Nude Party congealed as one unit in the southern mountain town of Boone, NC in 2013 and gained their namesake very literally. Bonded by isolation, house party debauchery, a religion based on pushing the limits of bad taste, and a precocious predisposition towards the Kinks, the Animals and the Velvets, they have burgeoned into a rock and roll act to be reckoned with. As the hysteria at their local shows steadily increases, so does their reputation with local law enforcement, forcing them daily more to seek employment anywhere but home. While snooping cops seeking to stamp out indiscriminate behavior scour the borders of their homestead the Nude Ranch, the group has prodigally exiled themselves and are staying scarce with a string of self booked tours and one night stands which have linked them up with with such likes as The Growlers, The Oblivians, La Luz, Night Beats, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.

Their stripped down and bare bone sound, akin to the British Invasion being transplanted back into the Carolina mountains, has so far proven to have been unrecordable… until now. The secret? Sticking to the obvious and going down into a sweaty basement with a few mics, fewer clothes and a revolving door of comrades and goddesses falling by for as long as they can take the heat. Lately the Nudes have even gotten good at playing with their clothes on. However if any audience member feels the need to participate in the spirit of exhibitionism the stakes at the Party will unblinkingly be called and raised.

‘…Echo Courts skips through a grassy patch of ’90s New Zealand indie pop and the umph of that 20-something moment you first heard the Zombies’ – Eric Davidson, CMJ

The Psychedelic Furs, Liz Brasher
Nov 5 @ 8:00 pm

The Psychedelic Furs:

If you were to dissect today’s alternative rock music, you’ll find that much of it pays homage to The Psychedelic Furs. Led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler, and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs scored major hits with ‘Love My Way,’ ‘Pretty In Pink,’ ‘Heaven,’ ‘The Ghost In You,’ and “Heartbreak Beat” in all releasing seven studio albums, spawning several compilations, a boxed set, and a live concert DVD.

Born out of the post-punk UK rock scene, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on US College and Modern Rock radio scoring a multitude of #1 singles.

With the advent of MTV in the early 80’s the band took off into the stratosphere, and when John Hughes’ approached the band with his film built around the Furs’ song “Pretty In Pink”, the band’s legacy was cemented. After a brief hiatus in the 90’s, and a side project called “Love Spit Love’, the band regrouped at the dawn of the new millennium.

The Psychedelic Furs touring lineup remains Richard Butler (vocals), Tim Butler (bass), Rich Good (guitar), Mars Williams (saxophone), Amanda Kramer (keyboards), and Paul Garisto (drums).

Liz Brasher:

Liz Brasher makes her own kind of southern music — one that’s caught halfway between the garage, the church, the bar, and the bedroom. She’s a soul singer. A guitar-playing rocker. A one-woman girl group. A gospel revivalist who sings the praises of secular bands like the Box Tops.

It’s a diverse sound rooted in the influence of Brasher’s two homes: her adopted hometown of Memphis, where she recorded her debut LP, Painted Image, for Fat Possum Records; and her childhood stomping grounds in rural North Carolina, where she was raised in a musical, multi-ethnic household.

‘I’m half Dominican, half Italian, and also Southern,’ says the songwriter, who grew up singing Baptist hymns in an all-Spanish church. ‘It’s a different type of southerner, and that’s why the music I make sounds like a different type of the south. By nature, I’m mixed. That’s been my whole life — having to reconcile two different cultures, or the religious and secular world, or the different genres that have all influenced me. From the time I was born, I realized I was going to be a big mix.’
