Free improvised music is created in the moment of the performance, without pre-made concepts or compositions. That doesn’t mean that they are not creating an aesthetic concrete musical form in real time. The extension of the traditional vocabulary of their instruments and the language of free improvised music forms a strong basis which they use to create a landscape of sounds in which silence plays an important role and a defined quality of sound.

Colby Dobbs at Eddie V’s
Jun 28 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

A refreshing blend of rock, jazz, soul and pop music — try some today…

Colby Dobbs Band (CDB) has been steadily increasing their fanbase, catalog of songs and overall momentum since the group’s inception that brought together an original mix of piano-driven, jazz-influenced pop songs in 2010. Colby Dobbs Band was formed by lead singer/keyboardist Colby Dobbs and bassist David J. Sentendrey after the two had previously worked on a project at a church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Both Dobbs and Sentendrey were looking to put their time, energy and talents into an original project that could appeal to a diverse audience and most importantly, produce songs that they could be enthusiatic about — and not just because they were their own. Colby Dobbs Band’s original lineup (and 16 months in-and-out of the recording studio) produced their debut album, ‘The Great Unknown,’ which debuted in spring 2012. The album showcases the group’s ability to write pop music with catchy hooks, while maintaining song structures that can be sophisticated and unique for their era. The group would later release a music video in the summer of 2013 for their single, ‘Cincinnati Queen.’

Haywire at Mac’s Speed Shop
Jun 29 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

South End Location!

Haywire formed in Charlottetown in 1981 by David Rashed, Paul MacAusland, Marvin Birt, Scott Roberts and Ronnie Switzer. In 1984 they won the Q104 Homegrown Vol. 1 contest; the first prize was the chance to record a single, but they took the opportunity to invest their own money and record a 5-song EP, which eventually sold over 5,000 copies in the Maritimes. In 1985 they won the Labatt’s Battle of the Bands, and used the $10,000 first prize to record more material. While the band member lineup had been largely unaltered from the start, drummer Sean Kilbride was the fourth drummer in the group’s short history. Ron ‘Bumble’ LeBlanc had replaced the original Haywire drummer Scott Roberts in 1984. He remained with the band through their demo stages, EP, and can be heard playing on two cuts of the band’s first record with Attic. LeBlanc was replaced by Mac Cole when he decided to move on from the group and pursue a formal education. Cole only played two months with the band, when Haywire’s long-time friend Kilbride became available for the job. In the summer of 1986 the group signed up Kilbride and successfully pursued a record contract with Attic.

The first commercial appearance of the group was on Cam’ron’s 2000 album S.D.E., released on Epic Records. During this period, various members of the original group consisting of Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, Freekey Zekey, and others, were first signed together as a group to Roc-A-Fella Records from 2001 to 2004, though they are now signed to their own label, Diplomat Records. Each individual artist, however is signed to a different label, including E1 Music, Asylum, and Def Jam, among others.

The group came to further popularity in 2002 with the release of Cam’ron’s third album, Come Home With Me. The lead singles were platinum hits ‘Oh Boy’ and ‘Hey Ma’, which both featured group mate Juelz Santana. The group followed Cam’ron’s solo album shortly after with their debut album Diplomatic Immunity released in 2003, which featured remixes of both songs, as well as lead single ‘Dipset Anthem’ which peaked at #64 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The double-disc album was a success and quickly became certified gold by RIAA under two months after its release. By the time of the release of their 2004 followup, Diplomatic Immunity 2, additional members Hell Rell, 40 Cal., and J. R. Writer had joined the group.

I’m a singer-songwriter.
I think “Lovers and Leavers” comes closer to reflecting that than any other record I’ve made.
I didn’t worry about checking boxes, making sure there was something here for everybody, or getting on the radio.
I just took some much needed deep breaths and let them out on tape.
It’s been a while since my last album by some measurements of time. Not “history of the universe time”, or “getting a bill through congress time”, but in the lives of dogs and recording artists, five years and fifty-three days is only a little less than an eternity.
I went through a divorce. I fell in love.
Changes were made, realizations were realized, and life was lived.
But, I kept on writing songs, on my own and with a cast of accomplished characters who combined their own stories and perspectives with mine.
Songs about my friends.
Songs about my son.
Songs about beginnings and endings.
Songs about songs.
Songs about acceptance and regret.
Songs about lovers and leavers.
With these songs in hand, I needed a co-conspirator to help me get them to you.
I called on Joe Henry, a gentleman poet and an elegant artist who seemed a trustworthy steward for my collection.
We recorded this record live in five days, using just an acoustic guitar, a mix of bass, percussion, pianos and organs, and a touch of pedal steel.
I didn’t have one song that I knew would be a sing along or would make people dance. I felt vulnerable in a way that I hadn’t in a long time. But I got what I wanted – a record with space, nuance, and room to breathe. It felt right for my art. It felt right for my life.
“Lovers and Leavers” isn’t funny or raucous. There are very few hoots and almost no hollers.
But it is joyous, and it makes me smile.
No, it’s not my “Blood on the Tracks,” nor is it any kind of opus.
It’s my fifth record — a reflection of a specific time and place.
It is quiet, like I wanted it to be.
Like I wanted to be.
