Show Review: Knocked Loose in Greensboro (3/2)

As intense as they come, Knocked Loose is coming to your local venue and selling it out; guaranteed to put the crowd on its head.

Knocked Loose is a hardcore punk and metalcore band from Oldham County, KY formed around 2013, even though several of the members were playing with each other beforehand. Their first EP Pop Culture was released in 2014 via Little Heart Records and in 2015, they released a split record with Damaged Goods via No Luck & Little Heart. In 2016, Pure Noise Records signed the group where their debut LP Laugh Tracks was released and the band has been tearing up the scene ever since.

Knocked Loose played the entire 2017 Vans Warped Tour on the Full Sail University stage drawing maximum crowds to the tiny area they generally played in. They supported Every Time I Die on tour for some U.S. dates and played along with Comeback Kid overseas in mid to late 2017 and during that time, Knocked Loose announced their first headlining tour for Spring 2018.

Jesus Piece put on an electrifying show and this point of the evening, the tenseness of the crowd was just starting to come alive, with enough energy to power a solar windmill in a small farm town for the next 5 years. The frontman Aaron was nonstop the entire time jumping around the stage. Jesus Piece was noted for having a little girl named Kodi come on stage to scream during the last song in Philadelphia at This Is HC Fest in July of 2017. It was just the right level of energy, inducing the crowd for what was to come. Terror was in direct support to Knocked Loose. The Hardcore legends from LA have been bringing the heat since 2002 and played at legendary hardcore venue CBGB before its closure. The old and young were there for an experience and Terror did not waste any time picking up where Jesus Piece left off. During the first few songs, there was not any shortage of crowd killing and stage diving and at one point, I counted 6 people going to stage dive at once. My second time seeing Terror was awesome and I am not even an avid fan. People were reaching levels of exhaustion after their set. You could tell who went all in for Terror, but most stayed reserved waiting for Knocked Loose. Straight out the gates, Knocked Loose plays some tracks I have not heard played live, and the opening track seemed to be a new track. This is very exciting considering Bryan squashed rumors of recording new material in an interview with Revolver in late 2017. Also, performed early were tracks off the split and Pop Culture, and the amount of finger-wagging and hoarse yelling from the crowd offset any exhaustion Bryan Garris experienced with his intense vocal style. The group has always been very in sync and did not waiver here. Fan favorites “All My Friends” and “Counting Worms” made the crowd peak. My personal favorite track is ‘Oblivions Peak’, the opener from Laugh Tracks. The song was written about a friend of Bryan’s who was kicked out of his fraternity in college because of his sexual orientation. This always hits home for me because of the involvement I had in Greek life during college. The intolerance felt toward fraternity brothers of different orientation (sometimes hidden) from others was repulsive, sometimes becoming grotesque. Bryan spoke upon the traditional Southern fraternity culture by saying this in the opening lines, “One by one/Rooted from a place of intolerance/I won’t cater to a coward/That hides behind a fraternity/Just so he can feel empowered”.

Knocked Loose put on a showcase that proved they can bring hardcore to another level. One that is not only meaningful to younger fans closer to their age but reviving interest from the OG hardcore fans who are likely fathers and grandfathers by now. The band is going to say and do as they please going forward and it’s safe to say Knocked Loose foreseeably is not going anywhere for a very long time. As our culture in the U.S. has become more ingrained to make heavy music relevant again, you see a visible difference in the people countering what they see going on in the world.
