1. When and why did you start making music?
I started making music as young as 7 years old. I had so much I wanted to say and music was the best way to do it. I got really serious about my writing as I got older, after I had experienced more of life. I released my first original single in 2016 and have been putting out music ever since. I have journals filled with songs, old and new, that I’m looking forward to showing everyone
2. What was the first song you performed?
Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson, what a throwback!
3. Who were/are some of your influences?
I think all the producers and writers I work with are definitely a big influence. They bring my lyrics, my words, and my song to life and help me create and tell the story that I want to tell.
New upcoming artists constantly inspire me too. That’s what I am. And to know that it’s possible for “a nobody” to become “a somebody” is a big thing. Any artist that makes a difference/makes a statement through their work is a huge influence for me too. Music is such a powerful thing. Some people rely on it to get through. Your music can make someone feel something that they really need to feel in a certain situation. It can make them feel better. It can make them feel understood. It can make them feel loved. And that’s a pretty beautiful thing.
4. What was the first album you ever owned?
Apart from Disney, Barney and The Wiggles when I was really very young, the first album I owned was The Best Damn Thing by Avril Lavigne … my favorite song to jam out to was Girlfriend. Ha!
5. How do your songs come together? Your process to create a song?
It depends. Its always fun when I’m in a collaborative session. Working with other writers and producers. We’re all vibing and there are so many different ideas flowing around. You start with a song and by the end its turned into something completely different, something better than you ever thought it could be. I try not to overthink it. I like to keep and real and organic. The more you overthink it, the more you can lose what makes the song true.
6. What is the story behind your current single “Walk in Silence”?
I think when writing this song we all put a piece of our personal feelings into it. I pulled a bit out of my songbook with this one. I think I was 11 the first time I started using a writing journal. Now I have stacks and stacks of them. I have songs in these books from years ago and songs from yesterday. Everything I’ve ever felt or thought or seen, I’ve written down. I carry one of my songbooks with me everywhere I go. Most of the time you think of something in the most unlikely situation. You don’t really even know what it means until you come across it later. But when you originally wrote it down, it clearly meant something to you. From that you can create beautiful music. “Walk in Silence” is about not being silenced. Having your voice be heard. Loving every little thing about yourself no matter what the world says.
I am very excited for the opportunities this year. I’ve just returned from New York where I was involved in an incredible Pre Grammy event “The Soiree,” where I performed my newest single. I was also in New York to attend New York Fashion Week. There is A LOT more music coming your way. We are already gearing up or the next single release then to be followed by the full album later this year! You can keep up with all the fun and embarrassing things I’m doing on all social media under @theemilyperry and at my website www.emilyperry.me.
8. To someone who hasn’t heard your music, give us three words to describe it…
Fun, Distinctive, Relatable.
