Liz Lorke talks about her new song and video for “Buh Bye”

What got you started into music? Was it at an early age?
I started playing piano when I was 4. My mom was a singer and dancer growing up in Trinidad, so I would say entertainment has always been in my blood.

How would you compare some of your influences from when you first got into music and now?
As I’ve evolved I guess my interests and inspirations naturally have too.. One thing that remains constant though, is my appreciation for the Jazz greats like Billie Holiday & Etta James.

Talk a little bit about your song and video for “Buh Bye?” Where did the concept come from?
The song is all about saying ‘Buh Bye’ to things that hold us back. The video doesn’t feature a “boyfriend” character because it’s not always a relationship that pulls us backwards.. it could be a bad habit or a crutch that you’re tired of running back to. My dancers and I symbolize that struggle and torment in the beginning of the video and slowly we begin to discover our power. By the end of the video I get back into bed almost as an act of surrender. I chose to end it that way because I’m learning that I don’t always have the courage to change my circumstances, but sometimes it’s in that time spent “staying” that my faith is both tested and strengthened.

How would you describe your music to people?
Rhythmic and soulful with meaningful lyrics.

What do you like to do outside of music?
I make pretty great cupcakes (which I’ve been known to sell at my shows) and yoga has recently become a daily thing for me.

What is/would be your go to karaoke song?
Hmm.. “Man I Feel Like A Woman” lol OR! “I Will Always Love You”

What kind of plans do you have for this back half of 2017/early 2018?
Currently spending a lot of time in the studio between Toronto and LA so you can expect a new project very soon!
