How did you guys all meet and when did you know you had something with the band?
Matt and I met when we were actually in middle school, of all things. We became friends over our love for the same bands and the same music, and maintained our friendship throughout middle school and high school. We were both in different bands after we graduated and were both in school, Matt being in Evansville, and I was at the University of Cincinnati. Matt and I kept in contact, and around the same time, both of our bands went down the drain so we loosely decided to start a project. We didn’t know we had “something” or anything for that matter until we decided to take a demo to the studio together, and that song became “Revolution”. From then on we were like, well hey, maybe we should actually pursue something with this band.
Describe playing small shows and growing as a musician into where you are now?
I don’t know about Matt, but personally, I do enjoy smaller shows. They’re more intimate and there’s more of an audience/band connection. We’re a newer band, so we haven’t really done too many “bigger” shows, but, I’ve definitely seen us grow as a band as far as stage presence and having each other’s backs and all that goes. Call me crazy, but when you’re playing music with others for such a long time you kind of know how to read each other’s minds and anticipate what the other will do, so if one of us messes up, we’ve grown to know how to recover, when to have each other’s backs, etc.
Who are some of your influences then and now?
Woah buddy so our influences are all across the board. For me, growing up I was a HUGE Fall OutBoy and Relient K fan. Those two bands definitely shaped my songwriting, and I give them a lotof credit. There are so, so many others, but those two were definitely huge influences on me growing up. As far as current, lately I’ve been listening to a lot of random stuff. Lately I’ve been super into Touche Amore, Rozwell Kid, Oh Wonder, The Menzingers, Rozwell Kid, Bent Life, the new Big Sean album, You Blew It!, Rozwell Kid, The Gaslight Anthem, and Shawn Mendes (Spoiler: I have a huge crush on you, Shawn). I could rant on about this section. This paragraph could be an hour long conversation. Maybe I should put a halt on that. Matt is super into Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, The Academy Is, Frank Ocean, Paramore, Tegan and Sara, Jack White, Regina Spektor, P!nk, and Sufjn Stevens.
What’s the song writing process like?
It varies for every song, but most of the time, Matt will give me some lyrics or an idea, and I’ll take it and compose everything around it. After that, we’ll usually get to a revision process and Matt will throw in some ideas as far as melody and composition goes, and I’ll definitely change and add lyrics and lines here and there. Most of the time, I’m the music, and he’s the lyrics.
AE hasn’t had the opportunity to tour yet due to circumstance, so I’ll tell you another tour story from a solo tour I went on.. So one time I was touring down to The Fest, and my friend who was on tour with me had a birthday, and she had never been to the beach. We had an off day and ended up in this no name small town in Florida that was on the coast, and we met these random people and they asked if we wanted to get in their van with them (which, honestly, probably was not the smartest or safest idea), and we did, and they ended up taking us to their “secret spot” of sorts at this beach we had never heard of and I felt like I was in a coming of age movie. Spoiler alert: we all survived. But, for future reference, I do not recommend randomly getting in some random person’s van.
Talk to me about your new music and plans for the back half of 2017?
We’re currently sitting on an EP that will feature our new single, Loaded Love, as well as Wild Hearts. So we’re gonna release that soon. We’ve already been discussing with Marc (who did our newest record), about when we can go back to his studio to record. But you didn’t hear that from me.
Favorite food to eat on the road?
Taco Bell. Hands down, Taco Bell. Honestly always looking for any sick local vegan joints, but Taco Bell takes the cake otherwise. I’ve even got a Taco Bell tattoo if that tells you anything (@FeedTheBeat, we’re right here…).
Who is your favorite comic book character?
Okay so proooobably Spiderman for me. Puckett might want to have a conversation with me about that, Puckett, I hope you’re proud. Always had a place in my heart for Spiderman.
